Rebuild a school for 503 determined Ugandan kids

Roof Renovation Phase II & Volunteers Service Day

In January 2012, a group from Shashamane Sunrise led by our Executive Chairman, Dr. Rene Zazou Williamson, and our Ambassadors musician Simba Amani and Miss Barbados World 2009, Leah Marville, visited Uganda. The trip was an overall success. The staff and students of the school were very welcoming during our visit. Their hospitality was overwhelming, treating us to performances and food.

We were met by Principal Adenum, parents, teachers and members of the School Management Committee, including its Chairman Rev Robert Ecogu. Rev. Ecogu presented us with a full accounting of the Roof Renovation Project expenses including receipts. During this Service Visit, we made contact with Matthew Boddie, a Peace Corps volunteer in Uganda, who has agreed to be an additional liaison with the school for Shashamane Sunrise. Mr. Boddie can assist primarily in the areas of communication and oversight.

During the guided tour of the premises, the team got a chance to see firsthand what progress was being made at the school. We are happy to report that Phase Two of the roofing project at the school was almost complete, with only a
few sheets of roofing left to be installed. The contractor, with the approval of the School Management Committee also rebuilt a supporting wall on the northern wing of the school, which had shown structural defects. This was
necessary in order to support the new roof on that side of the building.

We have requested a quotation from the contractors for the cost of renovating the final two classrooms in the
six-classroom block.

To date, Shashamane has raised USD$10,000 (minus GG administration fees) towards the Okoboi PS Project. We expect the roof renovation to be completed by early Spring.

Following our Needs Assessment interviews, the key priorities for the Ngora Okoboi Primary school in 2012 are

Completion construction of roof
Rural electrification, which will be led by our U.K. Vice Chair, Phillip Blechinger
Renovation of the interior and exterior of the six-classroom block
Assessment and implementation of Social Entrepreneurship / Income Generating Projects (IGP) led by Professor Weslynne Ashton and a group of students from the MBA programme at Stuart Business School in Chicago

As part of our fundraising plan for 2012, Shashamane will partner with Peter Kagwa, the Managing Director
of Events Warehouse, which is one of the top Promtions Company in Uganda. Mr.Kagwa and Events Warehouse are to assist with the promotion and production of the Ugandan leg of the Shashamane Sunrise Global Concert Series.

Construction of Phase II begins

In December 2010, Shashamane Sunrise visited Ngora Okoboi Primary School, where they met 503 very determined kids. A collapsing roof had forced them out of their classrooms. In spite of the decaying roof, these kids had been showing up every day rain or shine to attend school under a tree shade. Inspired by their determination, Shashamane Sunrise started a fundraising drive that raised $6,800 minus GG administrative fees.

During the Phase I of the roof renovation we demolished the collapsing roof, rebuilt the ring beam for four classrooms, put up roof trusses and installed weather proof iron sheets on two of the four classrooms.

After the completion of Phase I, Irene Omaswa, a Shashamane Sunrise, Uganda team member, organized a Charity Walk in London to raise money for Phase II of the construction work. On July 8th, she walked 17.2km/10.8 miles from Richmond to West Hampstead in North London, UK. Through these efforts she raised USD$2,200 for Phase II of the project.

Of the $2,200 we raised through the Charity Walk, we received the first installment of $1060 on September 15^th and the second installment, $920 on November 30^th. With the funds received from Global Giving UK and Global Giving, we now have enough money to start Phase II roof construction. We will start with the construction of the shorter classroom and when we finish constructing the shorter classroom, we will start on the long Eastern classroom. We are excited about the new roof and can't wait to finish construction so that once the new term begins, more children can sit under another roofed classroom.

We have attached a break down of the roof construction costs as well as the very first pictures we’ve taken of the construction materials we purchased being off loaded. We will keep you posted on the progress we make.

Charity Walk Fundraiser 8 July 2011 for Phase II of Roof Renovation

A worthwhile walk for the kids

With a tree shade for a roof, 503 Ugandan kids had been showing up every day rain or shine to attend Ngora Okoboi Primary School. A collapsing classroom roof was not holding them back. Inspired by their determination, Shashamane Sunrise started a grassroots fundraising drive that raised $6,800 minus GG administrative fees.

During this first phase of the roof renovation we demolished the collapsing roof, rebuilt the ring beam for four classrooms, put up roof trusses and installed weather proof iron sheets on two of the four classrooms.

For Phase II of the construction work we will install iron sheets on the two additional classrooms that have had their substructure repaired and the roof trusses installed. We will also install permanent gable end to protect the installed roof from being carried away during a storm.

To date we have spent USD $5512 on the first phase of the project. The total expenditure also included UGX Sh 150,000 (USD$61) from the Ngora Mission and UGX Sh 210,200 (USD$85) from the Parents Teachers Association.

She reached out to many of you through Facebook, phone calls, text messages and emails and you responded every single day leading up to the day of the charity walk. On July 8th, she walked 17.2km/10.8 miles from Richmond to West Hampstead in North London, UK. Through these efforts we raised USD$2,200 which will be used to fund Phase II of the project. Our goal is to have Phase II of the project completed during the summer recess so the classrooms can be ready for the start of the new school term.
