Dear Supportters,
The beginning of 2021 saw the continuation of all of the GVI Curieuse turtle and shark conservation projects. We were in the peak of turtle and shark season, with daily checks on the turtle nesting beaches for new nests while excavating nests to assess the nesting success was well underway and continued monitoring the Lemon shark juveniles.
The beginning of the year started strongly with turtle hatchlings being discovered from 3rd January throughout April. In total, 45 adult female Hawksbill turtles were tagged whilst a total of 302 total turtle activities were recorded.
The tracking of juvenile sharks was also in full swing after implementing 20 acoustic transmitters, with their acoustic signals being automatically recorded on 12 fixed receivers throughout their habitat. The preliminary results showed that out of 329,208 acoustic detections, only 1,203 of those detections were in the deeper waters off of Curieuse. This indicates that the juvenile sharks strongly prefer the shallow waters of the island and further highlights the importance of protecting this area, especially the mangroves. Due to the success of this tracking project, we’re currently in the process of extending the project to discover where the population of sharks that leave the Marine National Park go thereafter.
In support of GVI Charitable Programs "The 6th Mass Extinction" campaign, we will be joining nearly 500 other people around the world to help highlight the current conservation and climate crisis we all face, actions we can all take to help reduce the negative impact we are all having on the planet and to help raise funds to support critical conservation and climate action projects. To support of donate to the campaign, please see the link below.
Overall, in the first quarter of 2021, we continued great progress on the research and conservation of sharks and turtles in Curieuse Marine National Park. We are so fortunate to have incredible people supporting our work, and without that, we wouldn’t be able to continue to conserve these endangered species successfully.
We thank you sincerely on behalf of the park for your help, and we hope that you will continue to support our work into the future!
