Summary

Sinal do Vale is an established bio-hub, maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem services on a 200-hectare campus in the Atlantic Rainforest. To further protect this fragile ecosystem, Sinal needs to acquire a vital piece of neighboring land, safeguarding it from urban developers. This purchase will protect natural springs that provide water to 15,000 people and ensure a safe habitat for diverse animal and plant species.

Challenge

If Sinal does not secure this property, it can fall into the wrong hands, which could lead to an acceleration of forest fragmentation. Imagine a large chunk of ice in a cup of water - broken into smaller pieces, it melts faster. This is true with our Atlantic Rainforest. When broken into smaller fragments, it degrades faster, preventing its ability to regenerate, provide life-giving food and water, and protect the animals, plants, and people that live there from worsening natural disasters.

Solution

By buying back this part of the rainforest and placing it under Sinal's protection, we can secure land otherwise vulnerable to commercial development. Safeguarding this key piece of land protects a water source that provides potable water for our reforestation efforts, underserved people in the Santo Antonio region, and animal and plant life. It will also be the meeting epicenter for our nature-based solutions conferences and global learning programs that advance worldwide conservation efforts.

Long-Term Impact

Climate change has brought the world to its knees in disasters. In Brazil, we have seen the largest drought in 60 years, skyrocketing temperatures, and devastating flooding and landslides that have killed hundreds of people and displaced 600,000+. Furthermore, ~350 species of animals have become extinct in this region and 11,000 are endangered today. These problems caused by deforestation, misuse of land, water pollution, and loss of biodiversity could continue here if we do not act to stop it.
