Dear Friends,

Greetings from Azad India Foundation!

It is my pleasure to share our latest report via GlobalGiving on the progress of our project to provide sewing machine to a needy girl for self-reliance in Kishanganj district of Bihar.  Thank you for your support and for empowering women to rise out of poverty. A sewing machine may be a simple gift but it is life changing for many women and their families.

As a part of the ongoing livelihood support program, AzadIndia Foundation had given sewing machine to Rumi from village Miyabasti,Chattargach.

Indian government had announced complete lockdown in the month of March for more than four months in response to Covid19 pandemic. Many people especially those living in the poor and marginalized communities are still facing extreme hardships and economic distress. The situation is grim in the rural areas where majority of people are dependent on agriculture and work as landless labor and other odd jobs.

The project team revisited Rumi’s home after 3 months. She is still unable to get regular orders from the local tailors. Her monthly income has reduced to Rs 1500-2000 that is way less she was making before Covid pandemic. But she is hopeful that things would improve and her life will return to normal.

Thank you for giving chance to succeed! Your gift is making a big impact in not only their life but given hope others as well. Even a small donation has a potential to empower the whole family to earn sustainable income.

Do contribute to help us give life of dignity to more disadvantaged girls and please spread the word.

Warm Regards,

Before Covid19 She was earning Rs 5000-6000 (approx. $90) per month that has reduced to Rs 1500 (approx. $20) in the last three months. She is finding it very difficult to survive and hopes that the situation becomes better soon. Due to Covid scare she is not getting orders from outside her village.

The project team revisited Rumi’s home after 3 months after the Covid19 lockdown ended in Kishanganj. Due to total lockdown in her village, she was unable to get regular orders from the local tailors. However she survived this crisis as she got odd works from her village. Before Covid 19 she was earning around Rs 6000-6500(approx. $100) per month that was halved (approx. $50) during the time of the lockdown. Rumi is grateful that with her skills she and her family were able to get at least bare necessities then most other people who were forced to depend on others for rations and food supplies.

The project team also visited Mantasa from village Motihara to see how she survived the lockdown period. Anwari, Mantasa and Rumi are thankful to the donors and GlobalGiving for their support.

Azad India Foundation is running three sewing centers at the village Chattargach, Bahadurganj and Kishanganj where 100 girls are learning basic stitching and tailoring. It is six-month course following which a girl can start earning from her home. As most of the girls belong to marginalized sections of the community they are unable to buy machines. This project helps them to realize their dreams.
