Set up a New Rural Health Care Centre

It has indeed been overwhelming to receive funds that have allowed us to set up and operate ten primary health care centres (5 Rural Clinics and 5 Urban) in various districts across West Bengal, India reaching out to over 1 million people. Each centre runs four departments namely General Medicine, Optometry, Dentistry and Homoeopathy. At the cost of INR 60 ($ 1), patients are provided diagnosis and free medicine for seven days. The centres also provide free spectacles to those in need. Aside of this, each primary health care centre, in collaboration with other organizations, facilitates free cataract and cleft lip/palate surgeries for those in need.

The task at hand is huge and our constant endeavour over the last few years has been to reach out to as many people as we can, by establishing additional healthcare centres. The need in the current times is to scale up our existing operations. However, in order to operate and set up new centres, we require constant funding. The funds would be used for purchasing medical equipment, hiring medical as well as support staff, setting up infrastructure, purchasing medicines etc.

Our facilities are gradually becoming popular with the footfall of patients constantly going up, as news of patients benfitting from our treatment is spreading to neighboouring villages. We therefore feel the need to spread out to more areas.

The following is the feedback of a patient who has benefitted from our services.

Shonali: Shonali works as a teacher at the government school located in a village close to Kolkata. For the past few months, her vision had been declining, leading to her facing problems at work. Paucity of funds deterred her from visiting a doctor until she heard of the services provided by the Rural Health Care Centre. She visited the centre where doctors recommended she undergo a cataract surgery in order to improve the quality of her vision.The entire procedure for the surgery right from escorting her to the hospital and bringing her back after the surgery, inlcuding post surgery care was facilitated by RHCF for free. She completely recovered within a few days and was back at work, performing with an incresed efficency.

Support an existing Urban Health Care Centre

It has indeed been overwhelming to receive funds that have allowed us to set up and operate ten primary health care centres (5 Rural Clinics and 5 Urban) in various districts across West Bengal, reaching out to over 10 lakh people. Each urban centre runs four departments namely General Medicine, Optometry, Dentistry and Homoeopathy. At the cost of INR 20 ($ 0.25), patients in this centre are provided with diagnosis and free medicine for seven days. The centres also provide free spectacles to those in need. Aside of this, each primary health care centre, in collaboration with other organizations, facilitates free cataract and cleft lip/palate surgeries for those in need.

While the centres have been set up, these require constant funding in order to operate and continue providing their services to those at the base of the socio-economic pyramid. There is a constant need for funds to provide medicines, free spectacles to patients and sponsor cataract surgeries for those who are in need but do not have the essential resources for the same. Moreover, with the lastest technology around, funds are needed to replace the old medical equipment with new and better machines.

Our facilities are only becoming more renowned in the areas in which they function and the footfall is only going up, as news of patients benefitting from treatment at our health care centres spreads to neighbouring villages. There is a constant need then to improve exsting infrastructure at our centres, for which we require funds.

The following is the feedback of a patient who has been benefitted from our services:

Ameena: Ameena, a resident of Kolkata was a tailor by profession until a fading eye sight prevented her from working because her work required very fine stitching. Requiring a spectacle requires a hefty fees to be paid to the doctor along with the cost of the spectacle to enable her to either to see or read properly. One such spectacle at its Maximum Retail Price will cost not less than 1000/-. Ameena visited one of our urban centres and got her eyes tested and had medicines prescribed by qualified doctors. Spectacles were given to her at no cost since she could not afford to pay. Ameena is back to her job of weaving and earning her money again. The money saved by her was utilized for the education of her children and better nutrition for her entire family.

Support an Existing Rural Health Care Centre

Aside of this, each primary health care centre, in collaboration with other organizations, facilitates free cataract and cleft lip/palate surgeries for those in need.

While the centres have been set up, these require constant funding in order to operate and smoothly carry out their activities. There is a constant need for funds to provide free spectacles to patients, sponsor cataract operations and cleft lip/palate surgeries for those who are in need but do not have the essential resources for the same. Moreover, a few centres are becoming old and are in need of funds, so that old medical equipment may be replaced with new and better equipment.

The following is the feedback of a patient who has been benefitted from our services:

Rabindra: Rabindra is a 70 year old retired man, staying with his son, daughter in law and three grand children, in Mayapur. Over the years he developed a vision problem in his left eye but the paucity of funds and the anticipated high costs of treatment made him ignore the problem. His neighbours suggested he visit our centre, where his problem was diagnosed and he was offered a free cataract surgery facilitated by Rural Health Care foundation in collaboration with Rotary Eye Hospitals. Today, he has benefitted from the surgery and can his vision has shown marked improvement.
