More $$$ to Kenyan Teens

Sports at the Good Samaritan Children's Home
Due to your help, another teen is going to school this spring. Tuition for hign school in Kenya amounts to about $1000 US per semester. The children at the Good Samaritan Children's Home have an excellent record in passing their examinations to allow them into high school at the end of eighth grade. But with close to 50 teen in school, the orphanage must raise about $100,000 per year for tuition for that to happen. The children go to several different schools including highly ranked boarding schools, many of which are supported by a variety of churches. Other children go to local high schools or trade schools.
In a country where the average person makes $300 per year, this is a tremendous challenge to the orphanage's management.
Thanks to you, we have been able to donate $7000 to the GSCH in the last few years. This February another $1000 was sent to the home, so another child is no longer waiting. Every year there are more children. Our goal is to increase the amount sent so more teens can go to school, helping them and their community.

Here are a couple of toddlers who live at the Good Samaritain Children's Home wishing you a Happy Valentine's Day. In the past 5 years the GSCH has accepted more young children in its ranks, with babies sometimes left on its door step. In prior years most of the children in the home were of school age. An elementary school is housed on the grounds of the home. High school age students study in local schools, technical schools, and boarding schools. We are very proud that these toddlers will receive a good education from this infancy through secondary school. High school students with high grades may qualify for a free university education.

New Year Greetings from Orphanage

When I went to Kenya in 1998 I was struck by the friendliness and warmth of the Kenyan people. This is especially true of Mercy Thuo who founded the Good Samaritan Children's Home in Nairobi, Kenya. Mercy is very grateful and gracious for the support she gets from Global Giving through Fabulous African Fabrics, always taking the time to send notes to those of us dedicated to supporting her work. Ms Thuo is the "mother" at the orphanage, organizing the every day work of the staff and children and providing them the emotional support the need so much. One only need to see Mercy move through the the building followed by 25 toddlers to know that she is their true mother.
In the early 1990s Mercy founded the orphanage when she discovered 2 homeless children and housed them in an empty bedroom. The orphanage now houses about 125 children, with the numbers fluctuating because of admissions and graduations. On the 21st of January Mercy sent this short e-mail to me which I want to share with you, because the thank you is for all of our donors and expresses the gratitude Mercy is not able to express in a formal letter through Global Giving, as she is not the project leader on our account.
