WOW Tanzania plans to send abused and homeless children to private boarding schools, where they will be provided with top education, safe living space, and 3 square meals a day. Providing education and a safe space for these traumatized children is the first step in breaking the cycle of poverty.
There are an estimated 437,500 street children in Tanzania. Many live on the street because of the violence and abuse they suffered at home. An Additional 38% of children live in households headed by a single mother. In 2016, Tanzania had 2.6 million orphans from all causes, 40% of which is due to the AIDS epidemic. The magnitude of orphanhood in the country increases with age, from as low as 1% in children under age 2 years to as high as 18% in children aged 15-17 years.
A Boarding School will provide the basic necessities for the children, a roof over their heads, food, safety, community, and a quality education. Educational Benefits of a private boarding school include better academic performances, higher quality class work, positive attitudes, decreased violent behavior, and decreased likely hood of initiating illegal drugs and alcohol.
The long-term impact includes Increased high school graduation rates Lower high school dropout rates Healthier relationships and lifestyle choices Better attitude about life Higher college enrollment rates and higher educational aspirations Enhanced self-esteem and self-confidence Improved overall behavior Stronger relationships with people, teachers, and peers Improved interpersonal skills Decreased likelihood of initiating drug and alcohol use
