On the way to a Change

By Rina Lazo | Director of Benefactor Services

Henry is 10 years old and he is from Quiché, he lived only for three years in that community, but with the idea of finding a better opportunity his parents moved to Antigua Guatemala, where they settled and started a new life. The family consist of three children and both parents.

The way of living of the family is by selling handmade craft toys in the streets of Antigua Guatemala, every day. Despite of poverty, the family faces a very big problem, which is alcoholism. The father, who regularly spends part of his earnings in alcohol and often causes trouble to his wife. The child's mother, and the family is economically affected because of this bad habit. When the father is drunk, he usually leaves his home and, if drunk, verbally and sometimes physically abuses his family members.

Faced with this situation, the mother asked for help but many projects ignored her and did not help her in any way, until one day, making her sales route, she found Nuestros Ahijados on the way, with which she requested help from the difficult situation that he lived and not only was assisted through the Legal area, psychologically and academically with his two children, one of them in the Dreaming Center and the other in the Scheel Center. Since then, the father was referred to an institution to deal with the issue of alcoholism, and is supported by psychological therapies on a weekly basis.

The child has many desires to study, but has had many difficulties in his study and has even fail many classes, however, this has not been a reason to stop helping him and is constantly reinforced with additional tutoring for his classes and he is always receiving psychological, pedagogical, medical treatment and constant social visits to see his progress.

The life of the family is in the process of a change, and thanks to Nuestros Ahijados they have all the necessary resources for life, such as education, food, among others.
