Recipient girls with the bicycles
Today it is my pleasure to share you the progress made by the project loved and donated by you. Your support to our project 'Send a Girl to High School with a Bicycle Gift' has contributed in achieving the major objectives of ending child marriage through increased participation of girls and keeping them in schools till they complete their higher secondary education.
This report covers the updates of latest lot of bicycle distribution events held on 24th December, 2016 where 20 bicycles were distributed to high school girls of Baidhyanath Devnarayn Public Lions Higher Secondary School Tulshyahi, Dhanusha. Likewise our project has crossed more than six months since we started. So this time I have tried to study what difference has it made after the distribution of first lot of bicycles to 10 high school girls of Rajarshi Janak Higher Secondary School Kurtha, Dhanusha.
As per the school record 10 high school girls who got a bicycle each as a gift in May, 2016 in the first lot of distribution has significantly increased their school attendance. 8 School girls Suruchi, Chanchala, Rabina, Manisha K. Yadav, Manisha, Sima, Aarati and Najina were available during our brief study and their last 6 months attendance progress has been presented in the below chart:
One of the bicycle recipient girls Najina, 8th grader from the school says; ''At that time I could not concentrate properly on my studies and felt tired and sleepy earlier and left many home works unattended as I had to walk almost 2 hours every day for my school. But things have changed now: I am in time in the school, come early home, play with my friends and give enough time for my home works. My friends as well as teachers treat me differently in the school now and I feel like doing more study and make my parents proud of me''.
When asked Najina's class teacher Raj Kishor Shah how would like to rate Najina's performance after she received bicycle in the school? He just thumbs upped and said 'Very good' and addeded 'The bicycle has helped improve her studies and level of confidence and willingness to learn more. It has not only become the means of transportation for her long commute but also the means of transformation and empowerment'.
Till this reporting period with the latest lot of bicycle distribution event we have reached to 70 high school girls of three higher secondary schools of Dhanusha from the donations collected from our generous donors. One more distribution event is planned this January, 2017 where 30 more bicycles will be distributed to poor high school girls from government schools who have to commute more than 5 KM every day for their nearest higher secondary school. JWAS target as of now with this project is to reach to 500 high school girls. But it depends on the donors like you who will donate to this project. We heartily request you all to help girls from being married earlier and join hand with JWAS in the mission of ending child marriage through increased participation of girls in higher secondary education.
Donor of bicycles will be acknowledged with their name plate in the provided bicycle. Recipient girl's contact details, photograph with the bicycle and her progress will be shared to the respective donors.
Together with you we have done a lot – but we can do so much more! We can end child marriage once and for all.
