Schools closures have affected bicycle gifting ceremony

Latest field update:

With the 2^nd variant of Covid-19 authorities have shut down Nepal's schools starting May 2021 to date. Though restrictions on movement and some businesses are opening lately no one knows when the schools will reopen physically. Some private schools with enough equipment and resources have been starting virtual classes for their well-off students who have access to the internet but government schools' teaching-learning activities are totally on halt. Due to this, though we planned the activity we could not able to organize a bicycle gifting ceremony in any schools during this period. We are very sorry to all our generous donors and hope better situation ahead to organize the event as soon as possible. Once the schools are open again there will be no delay in organizing the gifting ceremony from our side. Hope all of our generous donors and well-wishers will be with us during this difficult time.

Education Materials for marginalized students

Dear generous donors,

Greetings and warm wishes from Nepal,

We feel pleasure to share you latest field update of the project supported and donated by you: https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/send-girls-to-higher-secondary-school-with-a-cycle-gift/

This time instead of bicycles we have gifted the Education Materials (School Bag, Note Book and other stationeries) to Shree Adharbhut Vidyalaya, a primary school located at Pipra Rural Municipality, Ward No-7, Danauli, Mahottari district of Nepal. This is done as per the request of the school administration themselves. The education materials handing over ceremony took place on 21^st February, 2021 in the school premises. Total 167 students both boys and girls of primary age group of the school received school bags, note books and other basic stationeries enough for one academic year. All the note books and basic stationeries were provided in the school bags they received each. This is our additional support to the needy students under our regular program – The bicycle gifting for high school girls.

Bicycle gifting ceremony is also planned in coordination with other secondary school administration following government's Covid-19 safety protocols.

With this project update we would like to receive and welcome suggestion and feedback from our donors, supporters and well-wishers to make this project more effective and efficient for the schools and girls we are working with. Your suggestions and feedback are welcomed for us and they will guide us to our ultimate goal.

Girls are becoming champions for stopping child marriage

This report covers the story of two girls who are dedicated to stopping child marriage in their community and inspiring the other girls to continue their high school education and not to marry earlier. Bicycles gift they receive from people like you have made it possible for them to come in the front and speak up for them and the other peers.

Sangeeta (15) & Radhika (16) (name changed) are 10^th graders from Technical and Vocational Secondary School, Dharapani, Dhanushadham Municipality, Ward No-9, Dhanusha, Nepal.

They both with their other friends have received a bicycle each before a couple of months ago. When I asked what difference has the bicycle made for you both: and their reply was something like this in the points (a) We have rarely missed the school thereafter (b) We have never been late for the school (c) We have time to participate in extracurricular actives held in the school and are now a member of child club and contributing our time for the club activities (d) Friends, neighbors in the village, teaches at school and even parents at home treat us differently as compared before (e) We feel nice, safe and comfortable while riding the bicycle to school!

In the school, I met Head Teacher Mr. Pradip and enquired about them and other high school girls who received bicycles before. He said the two girls have become the member of the child club after they received the bicycles in the school and are contributing their time in the club activities. The club is running campaigns against child marriage, dowry systems, and other social evils in the school catchments. As the girls do not have to walk foot for their school they have enough time to participate in club activities which they couldn't do before. Bicycles received as a gift has helped them become champions of stopping child marriage f in their community!!
