Preparing for IIT JEE: The Smart Class way

Students of Project Udaan

Dear GlobalGiving Donors:

Thank you for your generous support to our children.  With your help, we have been able to introduce a major addition to our teaching methodology from 2018. We had done so with the mission of enabling Project Udaan  Grade 10( earlier in Grade 9) students improve their learning outcomes. To motivate the students to get closer to their goal of cracking  the IIT JEE exam in 2020, we have introduced an hour of daily self- study with the help of video lessons. Your donations were a great help in setting up the e-learning classroom. We could buy the expensive videos and course material without hesitation because of the financial support provided by you. We bought  the LED projector, laptops, speakers, extension board to complete setting up the e-class.

What has been the advantage of adding the digital class to the traditional Teacher- centred class and how does it work? The carefully prepared videos are mapped to the syllabus  and are accompanied by booklets carrying thought-provoking questions that  help the students look at the video lessons in the active learning mode. One set of booklets contains chapter- wise questions; the other set contains chapter-wise solutions. This model of teaching/learning starts with students seeing the videos in small groups and then trying to answer the questions based on the concepts they should have understood by watching the video lesson. When they are done with their question solving task, we provide them answer booklets so that the students can check how well they had grasped the video-based concept explanation. If after all this effort, they still have a doubt about a concept, our teachers are available to them to re-explain and clarify their misconceptions.

Garima, now in Grade 10 of Project Udaan says " I really enjoy the way of teaching through video. It is my first time to learn things by my own. Every time I am trying to put more effort to understand the concept by my own, it builds my confidence to understand things without any help. Now through video I can easily relate the concepts of Maths, Physics and Chemistry with the real world. E-learning content helps me to broaden my level of imagination, to revise the topic on which I feel I need a re-explanation. I can do it on laptop through video learning. I really like to solve question booklet after watch the video and feel motivated to solve questions by myself.”

Analysing the feedback from the students,  we can say that the majority of the students are benefitting from the proposed model with regard to its impact on their learning . Shortly, their Test marks will be turned in by their Teachers and we will know their improvement levels in more objective ways.

So, thank you once again for contributing to our project on GlobalGiving and enabling us to purchase expensive equipment and learning material to give the students an opportunity for Active Learning. The method is working to develop a sense of responsibility in them and enabling them to master the content with fun.
