As December begins & Giving Tuesday approaches, Ocean Academy was excited to share with you, our faithful supporters, all the wonderful things that were accomplished in the first half of the 2024-2025 school year. But suddenly we find that we have only one thing on our minds.
On Monday November 25th, the Ocean Academy boys' basketball team defeated local rivals San Pedro High School to earn the right to go to the Regional Tournament on the mainland in Orange Walk. On Friday November 30th, the players, coaches and teacher chaperones took the water taxi to the mainland and then loaded up in 2 rental vans. At mile 39 on the highway to Orange Walk, one of the vans blew out both rear tires, sending the van into multiple rollovers. Ten students and 2 teachers were in that van. Five of the students and 1 of the teachers sustained serious injuries and were admitted to local hospitals. (The others were treated for minor injuries and released.)
We were hoping to be asking for End of Year donations for the Ocean Academy Sponsorship Fund or for the Lunch Assistance Program. But instead we are asking for prayers and donations to help with medical expenses for these athletes and teachers.
The hospitals here in Belize require payment BEFORE they will give treatment. And so the entire Caye Caulker community is pulling together to raise money for the medical expenses of these accident victims.
If you are in a position to help with these expenses, we and all of Caye Caulker are sincerely grateful.
And please pray!!
