This project will help five high-achieving students from Avenorpedo, including three young women, attend colleges across Ghana. Although each student has already earned admission, financial barriers prevent them from enrolling. All students were nominated by local leaders, ensuring strong community ownership and accountability. Investment in these students expands access to higher education, promotes gender equity, and builds long-term capacity within the community.
Only 5.9% of kids in rural Ghana go to a post-secondary school. It's not for lack of ability (77% of students are enrolled in High School and 94% of Ghanaian young adults are literate) or availability (Ghana has 100+ colleges nationwide), but opportunity. In the Ghanaian village of Avenorpedo, there are many brilliant, hardworking students forced to delay college for years while saving money for a single semester.
This project provides targeted scholarships to help five deserving students, including three young women, transition into post-secondary education. It also inspires the next generation of students in Avenorpedo to continue to work hard in school so that they might also have the opportunity to go to college.
While Ghana is a peaceful, stable country full of rich history and culture, youth unemployment remains concerningly high and economic inequality continues to limit growth. By connecting qualified but under-resourced kids to educational opportunities, we enable job creation, promote social mobility and improve the safety and security of vulnerable communities in Ghana.
