In 2016 Sinamandla, through its partners, has almost 1500 Self-help groups (SHGs) with more than 18 000 members around South Africa. Hundreds of these SHGs have been clustered together into Cluster Level Associations (CLAs) with 6-10 SHGs per CLA. Each SHG sends 2-3 members to be group representatives in their CLA. One of the roles of each CLA is to coordinate social and economic projects within the community that SHG members are involved in.
Parts of South Africa are currently experiencing one of the worst droughts in decades, which means that accessing clean drinking water is a daily challenge for many people, especially those who are vulnerable in rural communities. Members of the Khazimula Cluster Level Association (CLA) near Msinga, KZN, recently started a social project to address this issue.
CLA members take turns each week to go out into their community to fetch clean drinking water for the elderly and those who are sick at home - who are not strong enough to walk to fetch their own water. The CLA members also cook meals and bathe them if needed. This is a good example of the positive impact that the SHG project can make within a community on a social level.
Many thanks for your interest in and support of Sinamandla and its work with women in SHGs. Please do consider a donation to support our work in 2016.
