UMAZISIZE, Sinamandla's SHG newspaper

By Phil Donnell | Funding manager

UMAZISIZE Issue 3 2016 - Keeping children safe
UMAZISIZE Issue 3 2016 - Keeping children safe

For several years, Sinamandla has edited, printed and distributed UMAZISIZE, a newspaper for SHG members in isiZulu, which goes out to 10 000 women and their households around KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) every quarter. Each issue has a specific theme that is relevant to the SHG members, usually suggested by them, and features stories of SHG women and their groups from around South Africa highlighting their achievements. Past issues have focused on small buisness, promoting savings, children's issues, water and hygiene, and women's rights.

The theme of the most recent issue in August 2016 was 'Keeping Children Safe', which focused on child abuse and identifying safe and unsafe places for children in the local community. There was also a section which focused on ‘You and Social Grants’ with the aim of assisting SHG members and their households to realise their socio-economic rights. Sinamandla advertised an SHG Business Competition that groups could enter to find the SHG that is best using loans from its group funds for members to start or expand a small business, first prize for the winning SHG is $350.

Sinamandla also launched a new SHG Membership Card and hopes that all SHG members will get their membership card and be able to access various benefits such as discount or free delivery of building materials, discounts on school stationary and uniforms and discount on group t-shirts through bulk purchases as an SHG or CLA.

Many thanks for your interest in and support of Sinamandla and its work with women in SHGs. Please do consider a donation to support our work in 2016.
