Partnering with women's community groups, together we're growing seedlings for kitchen gardens for 5,000+ mothers and 15,000+ children while promoting COVID-19 awareness. 100% DIRECT GIVING: 100% OF YOUR DONATIONS IMPROVE FOOD SECURITY FOR WOMEN AND THEIR FAMILIES.
COVID-19 is causing increased unemployment in our partner communities. Mothers don't have access to food for their children. While waiting for small plots of corn and legumes to mature, families need fresh food to survive. Rainfall patterns are erratic due to climate change, and family farmers lack access to simple irrigation tools like watering cans and sprinklers. Buying seeds is an additional financial strain to families that are already struggling. Bar soap for hand washing is a luxury.
1. Partnering with community women's groups, we're growing nursery gardens of seedlings of healthy vegetables and fruits for women to bring back to their own home plots. 2. The women decide what they want to grow: spinach, kale, African nightshade, moringa, amaranth and more. 3. Food can be produced as quickly as 10 days. 4. Training in growing food is provided while social distancing. 6. COVID awareness training: we're distributing WHO and CDC information, and bar soap for hand washing.
Currently, we're working across 3 communities in eastern province Kenya with 5,000+ women participating. We have waiting lists and additional communities who want to begin the project. More than 15,000 children will receive food from this project, positively impacting their health. Long-term impact from this project is improved health of children and their families, and greater empowerment from women who can generate some income from sales.
