Summary

Amazon Rainforest Conservancy is securing a critical wildlife corridor in the Peruvian Amazon, one property at a time. We acquire strategically located land to reconnect fragmented rainforest, restore degraded areas, and create protected habitat for jaguars, Andean bears, and other threatened species. Local Forest Guardians protect the land while restoration and conservation work strengthen the corridor, helping safeguard this vital rainforest for future generations.

Challenge

In the San Martin region of the Peruvian Amazon, a critical conservation gap threatens endangered and vulnerable wildlife. The valley connecting the two mountain ranges of the Cordillera Escalera Regional Conservation Area (ACR-CE) was excluded from protection in 2005 because approximately 170 ranching families lived there. Today, this unprotected valley fragments habitat and exposes jaguars, Andean bears, and many other species to habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict.

Solution

To address this gap, ARCNP launched a wildlife corridor project in 2022 to acquire, protect, and restore land in the valley. Since then, ARCNP has acquired 14 farms totaling 235 hectares and restored 35 hectares of former pastureland. In June 2026, ARCNP signed an agreement with San Martin's regional environmental authority to monitor, protect, and research across 1,730 hectares within the Cordillera Escalera Regional Conservation Area, adjacent to 226.5 hectares already protected by ARCNP.

Long-Term Impact

Our long-term vision is to reconnect the two mountain ranges of the Cordillera Escalera through a secure, permanently protected wildlife corridor that supports healthy ecosystems and wildlife. Working alongside local communities, ARCNP will create sustainable livelihoods that foster forest stewardship. Through strategic land acquisition, habitat restoration, year-round protection, biodiversity monitoring, and community partnerships, ARCNP is creating a lasting and replicable model for ecological
