We keep pushing to Secure the Future

By Tony Mwebia | Executive Director

The Secure the Future initiative remains committed to tackling urgent social and mental health challenges facing boys and young men across Kenya. Although our recent online fundraising campaign did not gain the expected traction, the need for timely interventions is more critical than ever.

Current Challenges

Young men across the country are facing alarming issues, including:

  • Rising Drug and Substance Abuse: A national study published in BMC Psychiatry highlights that nearly 70% of college students in Kenya have reported lifetime substance use. This underscores the urgent need for integrated public health and psychosocial interventions at all educational levels.
  • Mental Health Crisis: Men in Kenya are three to five times more likely to die by suicide compared to women, according to the World Health Organization and the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics. This growing crisis is fuelled by social isolation, unemployment, and cultural pressures surrounding masculinity.
  • Systemic Vulnerabilities: Data from the Kenya Prison Service reveals that over 90% of the incarcerated population are men. This trend points to deep-rooted issues such as lack of mentorship, economic opportunities, and exposure to violence and criminalization.

Our Response

In light of these challenges, the Men End FGM Foundation (MEF) is intensifying efforts to take the Secure the Future initiative offline. We are focusing on:

  • Proposal Writing: Seeking funding and resources to enhance our programs.
  • Building Partnerships: Collaborating with local organizations, educational institutions, and foundations to expand our reach.

Our ambitious goal is to mentor and empower one million boys and young men across Kenya, helping to redefine masculinity through empathy, leadership, and equality.

Together, we can make a difference in the lives of young men and create a healthier, more supportive environment for future generations.
