Future Kupanda Girls!
Future Kupanda Girls!

Construction on the girls dormitory is complete and we are ready to launch The Kupanda Project for Girls™ in early 2016! This means that 96 girls from an impoverished rural communtiy in northern Tanzania will begin their four year journey to get a a quality secondary education.

Research shows secondary education is the most powerful tool for empowering girls in less developed countries to improve their lives and create change in their communities. With Tanzania struggling with some of the worst rates of education for girls, the Kupanda pilot project was designed to prove that comprehensive support for girls is a more effective intervention for improving lower secondary school completion rates, as opposed to disparate and discreet solutions that are not improving the overall success rate of girls in school. The Kupanda model brings together the following services and programs for girls to address the myriad challenges they face when trying to get a secondary education: 1) Safe Housing, 2) Personal Support, 3) Academic Support, 4) Leadership & Empowerment Training, and 5) Community Engagement & Education. The Kupanda pilot project will serve a total of 144 girls between 2015 – 2018, at which time we expect completion rates to rise from the current 4% to between 50-80%. Once we proved our theory of change that girl’s completion rates will increase as a result of holistic support, then we will have a model that can be replicated in rural communities across Tanzania and other East African countries.

We look forward to updating you on the girls' progress in a few months!

We have begun Phase Two of the girl's dormtiory at Idetemya Secondary School in northern Tanzania.  When complete in October, the dorm will provide safe housing to 96 girls from six communties in a rural area.  These 96 girls will be the first to participate in the Kupanda Project, our new and replicable model to increase girl's secondary school completion rates in rural East Africa.

The Kupanda Project will improve secondary school completion rates to 80% or higher by creating a replicable model that proves that girls will be better able to succeed in school if they are provided comprehensive support, including safe access to school, personal well-being, academic enhancements, leadership development and their communities are educated regarding the widespread benefits of girl’s education. Once we have proved our theory of change that completion rates will go up as a result of The Kupanda Project, we will have a replicable model that can be implemented in rural communities across Tanzania and other East African countries.

The Kupanda Project includes five Development Objectives: 1) Safe Housing, 2) Improved Personal Well Being, 3) Improved Academic Performance, 4) Girls Leadership & Empowerment, and 5) Community Education & Engagement.

We will be launching the Kupanda Project in January 2016 and we are currently raising funds for the many powerful programs it will include.  Please help by making a donation today!

In July, ASAP will be commencing work on Phase Two of the girl's dormitory to house the Kupanda Project for Girls, a comprehensive model to provide rural Tanzanian girls with support so they can succeed in secondary school.  Phase Two of the dormitory will complete the dormitory complex and provide safe housing for 48 additional girls, bringing the total up to 96 girls who will receive services!  Dormitory construction is expected to be complete in October and the Kupanda Project is scheduled to launch in January 2016.  We are still needing to raise funds for the programs associated with the Kupanda Project such as the girls leadership curriculum and science and math enhancements.
