In 2022-2023, the SCI-HIGH club was held in 9 schools from 5 cities in the country - Haskovo, Sofia, Knezha, Kozloduy and Vratsa. More than 80 students, grouped into 29 teams, took part in it. The students' projects reached 5,000 people in total. Two years in a row, student projects from Sci-High clubs have taken home awards from STEM Competitions. In order to open Sci-High clubs in 6 more schools, and support their teachers and student teams next school year, we need your support.
The level of scientific literacy in Bulgaria is alarmingly low. In the most recent PISA (OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment), 2018, half of Bulgarian 15-year-olds managed to answer only the simplest science questions covering memorization and reproduction of information (level 1 and 2). Only 1.5% could apply their knowledge of science in solving complex problems (level 5 and 6). School science lessons are largely theoretical and lack a practical perspective.
We at the SCI-HIGH Foundation aim to spread the scientific approach and help increase science literacy among students in Bulgaria. We help schools organize science clubs and science festivals where students apply the scientific approach to answer real-world problems. By introducing innovative teaching methods, the SCI-HIGH club at school is an extracurricular activity that aims to complement STEM (Science, Mathematics, Informatics and Technology) lessons with hands-on activities.
All students who join the SCI-HIGH clubs undertake a science project which includes interactive classes that stimulate interest in science. In 2022 - 2023, the SCI-HIGH club was held in 9 schools from 5 cities in the country. More than 80 students, grouped into 29 teams, took part in it. The campaigns and student surveys covered over 5,000 people in the 5 cities. In the future years we aim to cover schools in all regions of the country and help them apply the scientific approach in teaching.
