Water and sanitation (WATSAN) committees, made up of 11-12 students and one teacher, have been formed in schools. These WATSAN committees are receiving trainings on system maintenance and proper use of facilities. Once the sanitation and water facilities have been constructed the committee members will assume responsibility for overseeing proper use and upkeep of the facilities.
Since the WATSAN committees were formed, they have helped to design hygiene promotion programs in their schools. Examples of the programs the students designed were magic shows, skits, quiz contests, and poster, slogan and drawing competitions. Many of these programs were opened up to parents and the surrounding community, thus expanding the reach for the proper hygiene messages.
Plans to build the sanitary blocks are still underway. We would like to take the opportunity to thank those that have donated to this project for their generosity. We hope to reach our fundraising goal of $9,465 to ensure that students in West Bengal can continue their education by having access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation.
