Our project execution:
The food provided to school children, through the "School Meals" project, became a motivator or incentive to fight school dropout, by facilitating at or near the school a meal time that many children did not have before.
The children who remained in the enrollment records of the beneficiary schools were able to complete their school year and be promoted to the next academic grade (It should be noted that in despite of the COVID-19 emergency and the semi-presential class modality, the Ministry of Education of Honduras has provided more flexibility to students in rural areas, due to the difficulty of access to digital media and physical education material).
From April 2021 to February 2022, a total of 8,332. 07 kg of raw food was delivered for the preparation of 48,753 adequate, varied, balanced and sufficient lunches; distributed to 251 beneficiaries served in five different communities: Aldea Las Marías (the main dining room was established in the center of the village and 2 dining rooms in neighboring hamlets because the classes were held in a semi-presential manner. In this way we are providing food to the children on the days that they are not going school), Caserío Gualiqueme and Caserío Los Planes.
Before the "School Meals" project, 88% (171) of the beneficiaries had an insufficient diet; currently this figure has decreased to 23% (45) thanks to the delivery of a complete and balanced lunch that covers 30% (600 kcal) of the required energy and nutrient needs.
Of the 195 beneficiaries who participated in the 24-hour dietary study(24-hour reminder), in addition to the 24 beneficiaries who had a sufficient diet at the time of the first study, 126 more beneficiaries achieved a sufficient diet thanks to the project, for a total of 150 children with a sufficient diet.
During the “School Meals” project, nutritional monitoring was provided to 141 beneficiaries who attended the three days of nutritional brigades developed, identifying at the end of the project that 78% (110) of the re-evaluated beneficiaries maintained an adequate nutritional status, following the monitoring of 22% (31) of the beneficiaries who were found to have some type of malnutrition.
