February Half Term Day of Fun!

By Georgia | Manager

This February half term Brixton People’s Kitchen was proud to support their community with a day packed with food and fun.

BPK hosted 30 children and their parents/guardians in their local community hall in Lambeth Walk and provided a range of activities for all to enjoy.

Children were encouraged to get chopping (safely!) in our fruit kebab and healthy pizza making sessions. Plus, with adult supervision, the older children were encouraged to carefully and safely put their pizzas in the oven, and were responsible for stopping them from burning!

We had a table filled with craft supplies, an abundance of googly eyes, and all the pipe cleaners you could dream of! The children were encouraged to use their imaginations and create whatever came to mind. Our volunteers also led origami making sessions for those who were up for some fancy folding.

These holiday clubs give children the chance to take part in a range of fun, creative and educational activities such as arts and crafts, theatre, dance and cookery. Everyone ) who attended (parents included) also received a warm and healthy meal to keep them going throughout the day.

On top of this, BPK created and printed its own Half Term Activity Booklet, filled with a range of exercises to keep children active and engaged throughout the holiday. Activities such as step counting, fun ways to make healthy choices, hydration and exercise challenges and mindfulness activities, plus sneaky and fun ways to teach them about food waste.

Plus, thanks to the wonderful entertainers of The Flying Seagulls, families were treated to a free theatre show and circus skills workshop to tire the kids out before sending them home!

While BPK continues to wait for the lease to their community shop and cafe, BPK strives to continue to create safe spaces for the community to come together to learn, grow and play.

Thanks to their dedicated staff and volunteers a huge amount of effort goes into making these days really special for the local community.

As Spring and Summer approaches, BPK’s calendar is filling up with exciting community events, festivals, heritage projects and of course, lots of delicious food.

Stay tuned for all of the exciting stuff we have planned!
