Every day in the UK, half a million children go to school hungry. This is worse in the school holidays, where the two million children who qualify for free school meals cannot access them. At Be Enriched, we believe children deserve more. Our Kids Clubs seek to alleviate "holiday hunger" in South London, by providing nutritious food when there is no access to free school meals. Our Kids' Clubs also provide a chance for adults to meet and socialise, and fun educational activities for all to enjoy
In South London 10,000 children go to school without breakfast and skip meals in the school holidays. Hungry children are now watching their parents struggle, with the Cost Of Living crisis, causing extra stress for families. In the school holidays, these problems are exacerbated, as children do not have access to much-needed free school meals.
We believe no child should go hungry, so we run free Kids' Clubs, providing nutritious food to children who would usually access free school meals. Children take part in a range of fun and educational activities, including arts and crafts, dance, theatre and cookery. We try to put the joy back into food for children and their parents. Families can be safe in the knowledge that their children won't go hungry during the holidays, and children leave our Kids' Clubs with full hearts and stomachs.
Our free meals are healthy and delicious, and our activities are educational and fun activities. Despite our national funding being cut this year, this has not deterred us, and in 2023 we have served 300 free meals to children, provided safe spaces for parents to socialise and children to learn. In the future, we hope to secure a space where we can run these Clubs more frequently, providing food, fun and friendship in a permanent home.
