Getting Started with Gardens in Honduras!

By Anina Hewey | Senior Technical Advisor

In 2026, Fabretto's team has been busy planning to get started with this exciting project - bringing school gardens to communities in Honduras. This program will give children from 4th to 8th grade the chance to lead the design, planting, and cultivating of their school garden. Additionally, all children at the school will have hands-on learning opportunities through the garden, and benefit from fresh foods for school meals.

During the first months of the year, we've worked on:

  • Finalizing the curriculum for the school gardens program, which is called "El Huerto Educador" and draws from our experiences with school gardens in Nicaragua and our youth agriculture programs.
  • Designing the program manuals, which will be used by teachers and students.
  • Carrying out diagnostic assessments to finalize the selection of communities. We have already confirmed 4 communities and are evaluating another group of communities to choose the final 6 to participate this year.
  • Organizing the teacher training, scheduled for next quarter.

We're grateful for your early support of this project. We believe wholeheartedly in school gardens and have seen their impact, in Nicaragua and beyond. Gardens become a space for community building and participation, curiosity and experimentation, and holistic learning across the curriculum - going far beyond just learning to grow vegetables.

Thank you for supporting schools in Honduras!
