This project will plant school gardens to support more than 400 children at five rural primary schools in Honduras. Fabretto's team will train teachers and youth leaders to create the gardens and cultivate fresh foods. Using our hands-on learning approach and Fabretto school garden manuals, teachers will be able to guide students through using the garden as a learning lab. The garden will also contribute healthy foods for school meals.
Children in rural Honduras face many challenges - from food insecurity and poor nutrition, to learning difficulties and limited school supplies. The schools that we support are very remote and receive few resources. However, rural communities have a wealth of natural resources and potential to grow fresh foods. This project will create school gardens in 5 Honduran schools using Fabretto's approach to gardens, as drivers of nutrition, learning, and community participation.
Fabretto will work with schools to plant gardens and build local capacity to not only grow fresh foods, but also use the gardens as tools for meaningful, hands-on learning. Using our recently redesigned manuals and guides, created specially for rural Honduran schools, we will train teachers and youth leaders. We will also provide technical assistance and support to ensure that each garden flourishes.
The project will improve access to fresh, nutritious foods for more than 400 children. Through the project, children will learn about gardening and reinforce their knowledge and skills through hands-on projects in the gardens. Teachers will also benefit with new ideas for teaching, using the garden as a community learning lab.
