Zarbaig school in Dir is a one room mud thatched house with temporary shelter to provide protection. 100 girls will not be able to continue their education unless a facility with proper washrooms and classrooms is available. They will drop out of school between Grade 3 and 5 and never return to education. To mitigate this effect the community has donated land for a girls' school. In response DIL has committed to construct a school in Zarbaig to provide quality education to 180 girls each year.
Over the past years DIL has successfully trained local female teachers. Teachers are already using phonics enquiry methods to teach. Last year DIL introduced the Computer Program in the Zarbaig school. Girls learnt to use computer programs and taught them to family members. The potential in students to receive quality education is high and village teachers are able to improve their capacity. However if a proper school facility is not available, the girls will drop out of school before Grade 5.
In response to the immediate need, the DIL Zarbaig Primary School will be built on community donated land. The Zarbaig School Project will construct a safe school structure. The new school will have 6 classrooms, 4 toilets, a principal office, a library, and playground space. A boundary wall will be built so girls can freely use the play ground. The community and DIL's local NGO partners will assist in monitoring the construction work.
DIL Zarbaig school will provide quality education from KG to Grade 10 for 180 rural girls each year. It will support the continued development of 8 rural female teachers each year. 6 villages in Dir will have access to continued quality education for girls. Seeing the benefits of quality education, girls and parents will value education & demand a girls high school. With this input the culture & behaviour of Dir will change and capacity for making good choices will be there to support them.
