Public schools in indigenous areas in Guatemala are poorly equipped and funded, which acts as a primary contributor to the high regional dropout rate during elementary school (about 50%). At a school in rural Chisec, the children are currently using old, broken, homemade desks and tables, making learning difficult and affecting attendance. Our goal is to provide new desks for each student as well as a new table for each classroom.
Public schools in indigenous areas in Guatemala are poorly equipped and funded, which acts as a primary contributor to the high regional dropout rate during elementary school (~50%). One of these schools is in Barrio San Pablos in Chisec. We have already provided a new kitchen for the school to enable them to provide food for the children. However, students are currently using old, broken, homemade desks and tables, making learning difficult, due to discomfort, pain, and no writing surface.
Our goal is to provide new desks for each of the 156 students and a new table for each of the four classrooms. This will enable the students to do their work more effectively and comfortably, and enable the teachers to better present lessons. It will also help students be more comfortable during lessons, instead of sitting on the floor, and will provide a writing surface for their lessons.
When students have access to school desks and tables, school attendance, focus, and learning performance can improve. Students no longer need to sit on the floor, reducing the discomfort and pain they would experience. This, along with having a desk to use for writing, helps improve focus and performance, potentially improving long-term success for the children. This will hopefully improve their living standards after they graduate.
