Scholarship and Personal Development Program

Quarterly Report

July - September 2018

Executive Summary:

This has been one of the most exciting quarters for Bosana Foundation students. There are so many great news that we would like to share with you. Graduating class this year is the largest one so far, some students have graduated already and we have a significant number of students that will graduate by the end of the year.

This year, our Annual Bosana Team Building was organized in Tuzla by the Bosana students themselves during the month of July.

In August, 30 Bosana students also started the training for project “Pairing Youth – Empowering Coexistence” with Youth for Peace as our implementing partners. This project is financialy supported by the US Embassy in BiH- Economic Support Fund.

Due to the large graduating class we have decided to accept the largest group of new Bosana students thus far. Bosana has welcomed sixteen (16) new scholarship recipients in September this year.

Students and Program Update:

This year, we had over 60 applications from students across Bosnia and Herzegovina and the selection was not easy. Special thanks to our 2018 Bosana Scholarship Selection Committee- comprised of four members- who did an excellent job at selecting the best candidates.

We have also tried a different approach this year when it comes to final interviews. This year, our Bosana Alumni students interviewed potential scholarship candidates and submitted their recommendations to the Committee. This is a great way to keep them involved and part of the organization, and also a way for them to give back to the organization.

At the end of August, we began our project “Pairing Youth – Empowering Coexistence” with our implementing partners Youth for Peace BiH. US Embassy in BiH is the financial supporter of this project.

The objective of the project, which will last for 10 months, is for thirty (30) BOSANA students from different ethnic backgrounds and different parts of BiH to be trained to understand and deal better with current complex conditions of the BiH society to create, promote and live their own narrative of coexistence as young citizens of this country, while also having the opportunity to multiply the newly gained awareness by sharing it and their experience with 600 high-school students across BIH in the cities and communities where BOSANA students live or study.

Due to the limited number of spaces, we have two groups of students. First group had their five-day training at the end of August and second group started their training mid September.

Bosana Traditional Annual Team Building this year happening in Tuzla. Purpose of our gatherings is for our students to get to know each other better and to visit parts of BiH they might not have seen to build a better appreciation and connection amongst themselves and our great country.  We are happy to spend some time in Tuzla, to learn more about economic, cultural, and educational facts of the third largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Highlights of the quarter:

It has been an exhilarating experience for staff, our current and new students, to read all the posts from our graduating students thanking our donors through social media for the opportunity that has been given to them and how much this scholarship has changed their lives.

Eight students have successfully defended their final projects and officially graduated this quarter. We also have nine more students working on their final projects/exams and/or waiting to schedule their diploma paper defense.

  • Amila earned her Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Sarajevo and started working in her field right after graduation.
  • Armel earned Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Zenica.
  • Elma earned her Bachelor of Arts in Turkish Language and Literature from the University of Tuzla.
  • Selma earned Master of Science in Radiologic Technology from the University of Mostar. She also informed us at the end of September that she was offered a position in a clinic where she has been volunteering during her time as a Bosana student. She wanted all new students to know how volunteering can change their life and help them gain employment.
  • Svjetlana earned Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Banja Luka.
  • Dzenana earned Bachelor of Arts in Security and Peace Studies from the University of Sarajevo.
  • Lejla earned Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Diplomacy from the University of Sarajevo
  • Anela earned Masters of Science in Biological Engineering from the University of Sarajevo.
  • Admir was also offered a position at a robotics center in Tuzla. He already started his training in September while finishing his diploma paper and once he officially graduates he will start working full time.
  • Ivana received a 5-day all expenses paid trip to Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest paid by the City of Trebinje as an award for 29 best college students from her city.

Bosana students are still setting aside part of their monthly scholarship for their own humanitarian projects.

Last quarter they helped securing the funds for supplies that will be used to clean up and renovate space for youth organization in Sanski Most. During this quarter they have been searching for a new project. It seems that this time they will help a young boy and his family prepare for winter and a new school year. We will have more information about this project in our next newsletter.
