As we close out 2016, the Shenandoah Valley Scholars' Latino board would like to thank all our donors from the year. Your generousity has allowed our students to focus on academics and community work without having to worry about the financial constraints they face. Donations this year served multiple purposes:
1. SV-SLI was able to cover all student costs for Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment courses for our scholars. These classes can count as college credit for our students, thus increasing their preparedness for college while simultaneously reducing the number of courses they must take (and pay for) in college.
2. All graduating SV-SLI scholars were provided a new laptop computer for their college work. Along with an SV-SLI scholarship, providing our students a computer allows them to be prepared for the college experience.
3. SV-SLI provides our own college prep course. A college professor leads our SV-SLI students through activities to introduce the scholars to the rigorous coursework they will encounter in college. The course helps students understand time-management and focuses on skill building (critical reading, study skills, writing with purpose).
4. Our mentorship program continues to provide scholars with a current college student to guide our students through the process of finishing high school and preparing for college.
5. SV-SLI provides college site experiences. Our scholars go on field trips to local (and regional) universities with board members and mentors. These experiences provide scholars with a better understanding of college life.
Your contribution to the Shenandoah Valley-Scholars' Latino Initiative helps us continue to serve our scholars in Harrisonburg and Winchester. We thank you again for your generous support!
