Song Local Government Area, Adamawa State Nigeria, like many other parts of the State, faces significant nutrition challenges, particularly among children under five, pregnant women and lactating mothers. The area is predominantly rural and food insecurity is a key concern due to poverty, limited access to diver's food and the impact of climate change on agriculture.
Lunga community in Song LGA, has been severely affected by malnutrition, exacerbated by poverty, lack of access to diver's foods and the impacts of climate change especially on agricultural productivity where drought at the beginning of almost every year and flood at the end of every year has been affecting a lot of farms. Children under five and pregnant women are the most vulnerable with high prevalence of stunting, wasting and micronutrient deficiencies.
Combating Malnutrition Through Localized Therapeutic Intervention To tackle physical malnutrition, the project moves away from centralized, hard-to-reach clinics and embeds care directly within the communities to community-Led Screening (MUAC). Training local women leaders and community health workers to use Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) tapes for door-to-door screening. This ensures early detection of severe and moderate acute malnutrition before complications arise.
Reduction in malnutrition rate: -Immediate impact: early detection and treatment of malnutrition through community-based nutrition screening will result in the reduction of wasting (acute malnutrition) and stunting (chronic malnutrition) among children under five. -Long-term impact: sustained nutrition support, education and improved food security will lead to a significant reduction in malnutrition rates over time, contributing to healthier growth and development in children.
