Summary

Across Rwenzori region of Uganda, thousands of widowed or orphaned women are family care takers deriving livelihoods from small businesses to get basic needs (school fees, medicine and food), if not supported they will fail. This project will help YAGANET a social enterprise to scale-up over 99 women owned businesses, train in business management skills, financial literacy skills, and offer scale-up seed capital. By donating, you impact not only on business lives, but also the lives of families.

Challenge

According to Economic Policy Research Centre, over 13.5 million women live in rural areas, most whom become entrepreneurs by necessity. These women own/run very small businesses in addition to managing competing priorities like children's education and supporting their families. With challenges of limited access to finances, business uniqueness and skills to manage finances, their businesses are at risk of failing. This project will impact and enable over 99 women owned businesses to thrive.

Solution

YAGANET identifies women owned informal small scale businesses on verge of failing, trains them in basic practical business management skills, financial literacy knowledge and skills, and record keeping basing on their business needs. Organize them into manageable groups according to their enterprises, and provides them with Scale-Up Seed Capital for their business to grow and be able take their children to school while they inspire others in leading incredible businesses for economic change.

Long-Term Impact

The project will directly empower and support over 99 women owning small scale businesses enabling them to thrive and indirectly support hundreds community members through outreach-based training. By scaling up these enterprises there children will keep in schools, hence, reducing chances of school dropout, early marriages, and domestic violence. As empowered women, with growing businesses, will have better families, become community business mentors, and become locally-based change agents.
