Airline Ambassadors was instrumental in getting 24 fishermen on the beach of Barra de Santiago, official licences to participate in turtle conservation. The Ministry of the Environment even produced a new pamphlet about our program, which our Project Manager Ruben, holds above!
Nesting season has begun and Ruben has started on his new nest near the beach and has already buried clutches from three sea turtles (180 eggs) and they will begin to hatch in early October. He buries the eggs from each sea turtle in a seperate location and keeps track of when they will hatch. This year he will also cover the nests with palm leaves and some netting to stoplocal dogs from digging up the eggs.
This program empowers local fishermen and teaches them how to support conservation efforts as we pay them a fair wage for the effort, so they will not be tempted to sell eggs to restaurants. Although this is illegal, turtle eggs are still considered a delicacy by some.
We are still working to stop vehicles on the beach that impact turtle nests and nesting birds. Local police are supporting this edeavor more and more.
We couldnt have done this without your support THANK YOU!
