By Nancy Rivard | Project Coordinator
Out of 20 olive ridley nests this year we were able to successfully release 2,604 baby turtles so far!
Due to our project coordinators (Ruben Navarro's knowledge of how deep to dig the nests, we have a 95% success rate on healthy baby turtles (compared to a 60% success rate with a similar NGO a mile north of us).
Additionally, normally only one baby out of 1000 survives. However with our method, (first gathering the hatchlings and keeping them safe in salt water) and waiting until sunset the next night to release them into the waves, they have a much better chance of survival - etstimated at 1 in 20 surviving to adulthood!
We are arranging to secure licences for Ruben and other fisherman on the beach so they can continue this important conservation project. Also school s starting up[ again soon and we are providing a sponsorship program to help these same fishermen send their kids to school
Your support is deeply appreciated!
