Our mission is to conserve Nias Hill Myna (Gracula robusta) population, an endemic bird of Sumatra, who is on the red list status. The Nias Hill Myna is a distinctive large bird that is restricted to hill forest of Nias and Banyak Island off western Sumatra, Indonesia (Feare and Craig 1998). Famous for its ability to talk, Nias Hill Myna has been extensively trapped for the cage bird trade which has almost certainly caused its extinction in the wild.
The chanlenge is how to confince local people and goverment authority that Nias Hill Myna (Gracula robusta) already need emergency special attention. This will be affected to the local people in Nias island if they involved save and preserving this bird as a symbol of their icon in Nias island so that in future can beneficial tobe one of economic impact from ecotourism and birdwatching tour.
This project will generate data and information regarding the number of population Nias Hill Myna(Gracula robusta) remaining at this time and the interests of Nias Island as a habitat for rare and almost extinct in the wild .Also is awareness of targeted local communities and general public about problematic of illegal trade via presentations at school and university.
To improve law enforcement on habitat protection and species conservation; the distribution of endangered birds in North Sumatra mainly found in the outside of conservation areas. We will support and joint forestry patrol unit at North sumatra specially in Nias island authority as law enforcement intervention for endangered birds species and habitat protection.
