At the Fundación Bosque Seco Tropical de Colombia, we firmly believe that conservation is a powerful tool for healing the social fabric and building a new beginning. Recently, we had the privilege of conducting a series of environmental education workshops with children from families originating in the Catatumbo region. These families, who suffered firsthand from displacement due to the armed conflict in Colombia, have recently been relocated after being granted land in our operating territory: Honda, Tolima.
Our main goal was to help them embrace their new home and transform how they perceive their surroundings. During the sessions, we led birdwatching walks exploring the Tropical Dry Forest vegetation, teaching the children to observe and listen to the natural wealth that now surrounds them. This field experience was complemented by art workshops where the children painted the species they observed—a therapeutic exercise that relieves stress and fosters their emotional connection with the wildlife of their new territory.
To solidify this learning and leave a lasting legacy in their new homes, we had the joy of gifting several children copies of our self-authored biodiversity books. Providing this literature is our way of welcoming them to Honda, opening a window to knowledge, and empowering them to become the future guardians of this ecosystem.
