By Natalia Barragan | Natalia Barragan Castaneda
Artist Natalia Barragán Castañeda led six art workshops using recycled cardboard. One of the most important aspects of her work is research, observation, and raising awareness about the wildlife of the Magdalena River in Colombia, a waterway that is highly threatened by pollution, mining, and a lack of knowledge. The river is home to species of fish and wildlife such as the patalo, otter, catfish, dorada, turtles, and manatees, among others.
These workshops were attended by approximately 150 people, including seniors and children.
The artist brought a template and used it to teach participants how to create these pieces from scratch. Each piece can be used as decoration in homes and offices, but for some of the women—who were artisans—it also served as a business idea.
Thank you to the Alfonso López Pumarejo House Museum for hosting this workshop.
