Speaking with media training

Dear GG friends, partners and followers,

It is with great pleasure that we share with you our latest news!

This quarter, we have held the final workshop of our 2016 cohort, reviewed their final project proposals and organized 3 webinars for our Fellows and partners!

Fourth and final workshop of the 2016 cohort on Blue Economy:

The final workshop of the 2016 Blue Economy cohort took place in Belize City.

After exchanging progresses and news, the MAR Leadership Team trained Fellows on project design. Alyssa Carnegie, director of communications for Oceana Belize, trained Fellows on how to talk to the media. Through an energetic presentation and various exercises, she provided them with valuable tools and tips to get their message through in various interview situations.

Kim Bonine from Conservation Strategy Fund deepened her training in economic tools through concepts such as finance for conservation, sustainable business plan, economic impact analysis, and fisheries management and policies. Exercises and case studies illustrated her presentations for a better understanding and dynamic.

Larry Epstein from the Environmental Defense Fund (Mesoamerica and Myanmar) presented the ecosystem-based program for the management of the Belizean artisanal fishery, with emphasis on Glovers Reef and Port Honduras, the pilot sites. Linking to Kim's training the previous day and reminding the participation of several Belizean MAR Fellows in the project, Larry presented catch data, monitoring data and testimonials from fishermen. Eric Bjorkstedt, oceanographer from NOAA, shared experiences through various case studies on ocean science behind fisheries management.

Fellows Stuart, Diana, Isabel and Julio  presented their projects, receiving feedback from experts and colleagues.

2011 MAR Fellow Kirah, after sharing her own experience as part of the MAR-L program, presented the history, design, successes and challenges of the Hol Chan Marine Park where she is the monitoring coordinator.

During the field trip, Fellows visited the BTIA Caye Caulker reserve, John’s project, afterwards they met fishermen at the lobster reception station where they deliver their products and which is part of Isabel’s project. The group then snorkelled at the Hol Chan Marine Reserve Reef and strolled the streets of Caye Caulker.

The last phase of the workshop was focused on resource mobilization and fundraising with Annette Candanedo. Fellows were able to familiarize themselves with the different sources of funding, understand the difference between resources and funding, the different types of campaigns and especially the 6 steps to follow for a successful strategy. The professionalization and institutionalization of fundraising must be included in the strategic plans of organizations to ensure their sustainability.

Fellows from past generations: Angeline, Nicanor, Joel, Seleem, Adriel, Leonel and Celso accompanied the group, shared experiences and exchanged contacts information with Fellows and experts throughout the week, strengthening the constantly growing MAR Leadership Network.

The farewell was very emotional with special surprises and activities for the MAR-L team from the Fellows.

The last few weeks, Fellows have been sending their final version of project proposal and the MAR-L team has been reviewing them and sending last comments.

International Marine Protected Areas Congress 4 in Chile: MAR Leadership and FMCN represented!
