Increased education technology & safety awareness

By Alejandro Vazquez | Program Manager

Dear Supporters,

This quarter we saw previous donations of equipment used at its full potential thanks to the installation of Internet service. The safety of the children’s workplace was also improved by training and the certification of Save the Children staff in Puerto Morelos as Emergency First Responders Care for Children.

Last quarter was a great closure of 2019 and even greater start of 2020. During 2019 volunteers from the children project in Puerto Morelos managed to deliver at least 4 lessons of English classes, Health Workshops and Environmental lessons monthly. Additionally, there were other activities lead by GVI volunteers such as physical education and in important dates around global awareness (Apartheid from South Africa, The Holocaust from Germany, and Nelson Mandela’s Day are examples). During November the environmental awareness lessons were changed to focus on marine conservation topics. Students learnt about important events that affect marine ecosystems, like coral diseases, reef importance, impact of human activities, as well as the different species and ecosystems of Puerto Morelos.

As we did in Playa del Carmen and the core team in Cancun, our GVI field team trained 3 Save the Children staff from Puerto Morelos who interact with children every day. The training included Primary & Secondary Care, Care for Children and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) use, increasing the response in case of emergencies and identifying the hazards that children may be exposed to at the working centre.

During the last weeks of December, the Internet connection was finally established at the Ludoteca. The service has been paid for 12 months in advance, including installation fees. This donation ensures that the previously donated SMART TV plays documentaries on line, and Save the Children staff can connect their phones to the internet to stream music for physical activities using the speakers connected via Bluetooth. This is also making it easier for staff to communicate, report and plan their work more efficiently.

About 40 different children in Puerto Morelos have benefited from the work of GVI and the funds from the GVI Trust this quarter.

GVI Puerto Morelos and The GVI Trust are improving Quality education, and good health and well-being by volunteering with relevant lessons and workshops and providing important training and equipment to Save the Children, supporting them to reach their objectives and strengthening the partnership.

After improving the facilities, training staff and providing technologies and services, we are ready to move forward and continue with the fundraising to provide sports equipment. This was the initial request from children as they wanted to play football and learn other sports. Physical activities are important to develop leadership and teamwork skills as well as showing personal initiative. Our next goal is to provide sports equipment to offer other disciplines of sports such as volleyball, netball, football goals and balls, basketball baskets and balls.

The Ludoteca has white walls at the playground and we want to paint a mural to make it look more appealing and inviting. The idea is to paint sport related pictures that children draw in their notebooks so they are given the opportunity to contribute to the design of the mural. There are going to be positive messages to encourage them and parents can help in the painting of the mural; an opportunity to support their children’s development.

There are still some improvements needed for the safety of the children and Save the Children staff alike at the entrance of the facility. A bell is needed for parents to ring when they drop off or pick up their children at the Ludoteca facility. There have been previous conflicts of children’s custody and staff have had to deal with angry parents whilst trying to maintain the safety of the children. The bell will allow for a more organised and safe handover of the children where staff will always be aware of drop offs and pickups.

With your help we have done so much for the Children in Puerto Morelos and have made amazing improvements to their learning centre. We can continue improving their lives as we contribute to enhance their education while keeping them safe in the process.

With Gratitude,

Mexico Children
