Because of your incredible support, we have been able to rebuild Suncokret's new Community Center, one step at a time.
When the roof of our previous community center collapsed in June 2025, it was another devastating setback. After waiting five long years for repairs to our original space following the 2020 earthquakes, we were finally able to rent a new building in the heart of the village at the beginning of this year—a place that will become the new home of the Suncokret Community Center. This new beginning has only been possible because of you.
The transformation is well underway. What was once an empty, neglected space is slowly coming back to life. After clearing away debris and painting the walls, we continued with installing new flooring and ceramic wall tiles. One of our amazing volunteers carefully removed the old plastic signage from the windows and gave them a thorough clean, allowing light to fill the space once again.
Every improvement brings us one step closer to opening our doors. The work is demanding, but it is driven by hope, determination, and the belief that this center will once again become a place where our community can gather, learn, and heal. We will continue rebuilding—and we look forward to sharing each milestone with you.
Throughout all of these challenges, one thing has never changed: we never stopped showing up.
Even without offices or activity rooms, our youth workers and international volunteers adapted. They brought learning directly to children through tutoring and homework support at the local elementary school. We continued our weekly visits to daycare centres in Vrginmost and Topusko, as well as the retirement home in Glina, ensuring that children, families, and older people continued to receive the support and connection they rely on.
For more than two decades, Suncokret has provided free educational, social, and community programs for children, young people, and older adults in one of Croatia's most underserved post-war regions. Because a safe community space is about much more than bricks and mortar—it's where friendships are formed, confidence grows, learning happens, and people feel seen, valued, and supported.
We are deeply grateful for every donation, every shared post, every volunteer, and every act of kindness that has brought us this far. This journey is not over, but with your continued support, we know we can keep moving forward.
Please continue to stand with us and help spread the word. Together, we are building more than a community center—we are helping rebuild hope, resilience, and community.
