The project will help renovate Suncokret's new Community Center. After the June 5, 2025 community centre roof collapse-and 4.5 years waiting for post-2020-earthquake repairs-we have operated without a safe space. We secured a new location, but it needs significant repairs before it can serve the community. Suncokret provides free support and activities for children, youth, and the elderly in one of Croatia's poorest post-war municipalities, and a safe space is essential to continue our work.
Suncokret's community center roof collapsed. We urgently need to renovate the new safe Community Center premises. We run daily activities to empower socially excluded children, youth and elderly in an isolated, poor, rural, ethnically divided post-war, post earthquake community. Our programs provide innovative and enriching activities to over 200 children, adults and elderly and improve overall quality of life. We conduct activities based on community need and remedy local issues and challenges.
We quickly secured a donation of two earthquake-proof containers to use as temporary offices. However, since the roof collapse in June 2025, we have been unable to provide after-school activities for children and youth or support programs for adults and the elderly. We have now found new premises for the Suncokret Community Center, but they require substantial repairs before they can serve the community. A safe, renovated space is essential for us to continue our daily activities and programs.
Whether offering help in times of crisis (eg. earthquakes) or working daily to reduce social isolation and deprivation, Suncokret remains a symbol of solidarity and support. A safe office space will enable us to host 160 international volunteers that help our community, empower 120 local children & youth, help 100 elderly and families through innovative activities. It is more than a buidling. It is a beacon of hope and a vital space for programs and activities that serve the entire community.
