Your Help Saved These Dogs from Terrible Abuse

Roadie lost his leg after being dragged by a car

Thank you for donating to our Emergency Medical Fund, which helps pets in need of urgent treatment to save their lives or free them from chronic pain. Many of the pets who benefit from our Emergency Medical Grants have suffered terrible abuse and neglect, but are now happy and healthy thanks to your help. Here are just a few examples:

Roadie
Roadie was found in southern Missouri, unable to use his front leg. It appeared that he had been dragged behind a vehicle. His front leg had to be amputated. Our grant enabled People Helping Pets in Jefferson, MO, to pay for his surgery, as well as the heartworm treatment he received after he'd recovered. Today, Roadie is thriving in his foster home, which he shares with several furry brothers and sisters whom he adores. You can learn about adopting Roadie here.

Willow
Willow and seven other husky mixes came to Ark-Valley Humane Society in Buena Vista, CO, in January as part of a cruelty seizure after being abandoned without a consistent food source or clean water in frigid mountain temperatures. Scared and frail, their bones easily visible from weeks without food, they were slow to trust and scared of everything. Our grant helped to cover their medical care, and as they recovered, they revealed themselves to be some of the most tender and loving animals the shelter's staff had ever met. Blackie
Blackie was neglected for years before he was rescued by Sweet Dream House Rescue in Norwood, OH. With help from our grant, he was rushed to the hospital, where the horrified vets spent hours shaving his matted fur, only to discover that his skin had ruptured from the weight of the mats and he was covered in open wounds that required stitches. Blackie signaled his thanks with licks and kisses for everyone who worked on him. He has since recovered and been adopted into a loving forever home.

Dallas
Volunteers at Mazie's Mission in Frisco, TX, had to help when they received a photo from Dallas Animal Services of an unrecognizable breed of dog covered in mange, emaciated, and in bad shape. Thanks to our grant, they were able to fund the dog's treatment for heartworms, severe mange, secondary skin infections and intestinal parasites, as well as a tail amputation. Now named Dallas, he's happy, healthy and adoptable -- you can meet Dallas here.

Unfortunately, while these dogs are safe, we get requests to help others like them every day. Your donations enable us to alleviate their suffering. Thank you so much for your ongoing support.

These Pets Are Now Free from Pain Thanks to You!

Man Man is happy and healthy thanks to our grant.

Thank you so much for supporting the Petfinder Foundation's Emergency Medical Grant fund. Every month, we award grants so that adoption groups can assist homeless pets in desperate need of veterinary care. Here are just a few pets whose lives have been changed recently by donations like yours.

Man Man
When the 9-year-old Dachshund arrived at the Kansas Humane Society in Wichita, he couldn't walk due to a ruptured disc in his back that left his hind legs paralyzed. Our Emergency Medical Grant helped the shelter pay for a wheelchair for Man Man, as well as laser and water therapy, where he swam and walked on an underwater treadmill. Both of those treatments helped him significantly. Man Man is now happy and healthy in his forever home. “Thank you to the Petfinder Foundation for the emergency medical grant providing much needed care for pets like Man Man,” says KHS President/CEO Mark Eby.

Hunter
Dumped on the streets and then brought to a crowded shelter in the South, 2-year-old Hunter was at risk of euthanasia before he was taken in by Long Trail Canine Rescue in Wilder, VT, and placed in a foster home. But it quickly became apparent that he was in pain when he walked. A visit to an orthopedic vet revealed that Hunter needed surgery on both hips. Our grant is making that treatment possible. "Hunter is well on his way to a life of a normal dog, free of pain," says Long Trail VP Kim Frigault. "One more surgery to go and some recovery time with his adoptive family and Hunter's future is looking bright. Thank you, Petfinder Foundation!"

Felicia
Felicia was found by some children whose mother wouldn't let them bring her indoors, but she was clearly in poor health. Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary in Hendersonville, TN, took her in and found that Felcia was very thin and had an upper respiratory infection, as well as a painful open wound on her stomach the size of a golf ball. A vet guessed that it was an old abscess that had ruptured. We gave the rescue a grant to cover Felicia's veterinary care, and she's now completely healed and ready for her forever home. "We would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the Petfinder Foundation," says FFAS's Kim Patton. "We are so fortunate to receive this grant."

Marcellas
The 10-month-old female pit bull mix who came to Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter in Fairfield, IA, as a stray, her right rear leg hanging limp. The vet thought it was a months-old injury that had not been treated, and recommended the leg be amputated. Says Executive Director Lindsey Sime, "Marcellas was given pain meds to relieve any discomfort while we tried to find a way to pay for her surgery. It didn't take long for the Petfinder Foundation to let us know that they would be able to help, and in mid-December, Marcellas had her surgery done. She had a very smooth recovery and was adopted on Jan. 7, 2016, by a wonderful family that renamed her Beauty."

Your Donations Helped These Injured & Abused Dogs

Month-old Carley needed emergency surgery.

Thank you for donating to the Petfinder Foundation's Emergency Medical Grant fund. Your gift has already helped us help dozens of pets suffering from the most severe injuries and illnesses as a result of abuse and neglect. For these animals, medical care is a necessity in order for them to become adoptable. Here are just a few of the pets aided by the Emergency Medical Grants you helped fund:

Carley
Tiny 4-week-old Carley came to Capital Area Rescue Effort (CARE) in Sandston, Va., from an open-admission shelter in South Carolina, where she was scheduled for euthanasia due to her rectal fistula, a congenital birth defect that is fatal in most cases. Not only was the condition extremely painful for her, it caused a severe urinary tract infection that was becoming septic. CARE immediately got Carley emergency surgery to correct the condition. She healed perfectly and is expected to live a normal, happy life!

Gemma
As a homeless puppy in rural Kentucky, Gemma ran across a rural road and was hit head-on by a car doing 60+ miles an hour. She ended up lodged in the grille of the car with two badly broken legs. Her rescuers discovered that the painfully skinny dog's stomach was full of rocks because she'd been eating anything she could find. She was also infested with fleas and ticks. Without resources for expensive vet care, her rescuers in Kentucky arranged for Gemma to be flown to Cayuga Dog Rescue in Ithaca, N.Y., where she was treated by orthopedic specialists. The loving, playful girl recovered beautifully and has been adopted!

Webster
Webster was found abandoned behind a barn, living in an outside pen surrounded by six-foot-high weeds. Taken in by Bishop's Small Dog Rescue in Wyanet, Ill., he was severely emaciated and walking on his elbows due to malnourishment and lack of exercise. His right paw was completely floppy, and X-rays revealed that the bones of his wrist had been completely pulverized. Webster has been gaining weight and getting healthy as his vets observe him to determine whether his leg will need to be amputated or whether it can be reinforced with surgically implanted plates. But one thing is for sure: He will never know hunger and abandonment again.

Rucker
Rucker's owner ran over the 1-year-old pit bull mix with her car, then left him tied to a chain to suffer for two weeks. His left femur was broken in two, his left hip completely out of its socket. Our grant helped Dog Town Canine Rescue pay for the amputation of Rucker's injured leg. He is doing great as a tripod and has been adopted into an adoring home where he has two canine companions to romp with. Dog Town Canine Rescue is working with law enforcement to assist with the prosecution of Rucker's former owner.

Reason
Reason was rescued by M&M's Fur-Ever Furbabies in Vass, N.C., from a life where she was used for breeding. She was starved, beaten, shoved into tiny crates for days, overbred, and had her canines shaved down and front top and bottom teeth pulled out so she couldn't bite. Her gums were bruised, swollen, irritated and extremely painful, making it very hard for her to eat. We gave the rescue a grant to have dental surgery to correct the painful condition of Reason's mouth so that she could eat and regain her health. She has gained 20 lbs., is starting to eat solid foods and, best of all, now has a constantly wagging tail, runs and jumps daily and displays a contagious smile every day.
