GECC is a small, nonprofit doing big things. We've been hard at work in 2016 growing the ECP Training Program and prerparing to launch the new class of ECP students at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital. Here's a quick update of some recent GECC successes:

1. 2015 Annual Report: We published our 2015 Annual Report in June. Highlights include:

Updates on the new expansion of the ECP Program to Masaka Hospital
A First: 100% Ugandan Ground Team
The Global Emergency Medicine Short Course at Masaka
ECP Graduation at Nyakibale
Received over $1 million of in-kind donations in 2015

2. 2016 Annual Meeting: GECC held its Annual Meeting in Chicago during the first week of August. It was a very busy few days, but much was accomplished. The team was excited to be together and plan for the coming year as we build up the Masaka ECP Training Program.

3. Lagunitas Brewing Company Fundraising Event: On August 1st, GECC held a funraising event at Lagunitas Brewiong Company in Chicago. The event was coupled with GECC Annual Meeting. Thanks to the generosity and support of those in attendence, we raised over $7,500 that will directly support the training of life saving Emergency Care Practitioners in Uganda! All of us from GECC really enjoyed the great company, delicious beer, and fine Chicago hospitality.

4. In case you missed it, Brian Rice, GECC's Research Director, published an important article in the journal, Pediatrics: Mortality in Children Under Five Receiving Nonphysician Clinician Emergency Care in Uganda.

Your Donations In Action

The Masaka Team outside the ED

GECC has been hard at work this spring, so I wanted to share a story with you that highlights how your donations have been instrumental in building an education system and saving lives. The following blog post excerpt was written by Rashidah Nambaziira, GECC's Program Coordinator at Masaka.

Every once in a while something happens that reminds me of why the work GECC is doing is invaluable, and worth the effort we all put in. GECC recently started training nurses at Masaka Hospital, which presents a whole new set of challenges because it’s a public hospital: there are more patients who are sicker, and the resources are limited to what the government provides as part of free health care to the public.

Over the past six months, the progress in the ED at Masaka is very evident in both the patient outcomes and the changes in ED patient management. It’s even more evident in the stories the ECPs, the GECC research team, and the ED nurses tell about the impact of the training on management of individual patients. This story is an example of that impact.

While working in my office, which is in the same building as the ED, I heard a loud cry from the ED; this is not unusual since we get a lot of patients screaming from pain. I went in anyway, because the crying seemed to increase with more people joining in.

Update: Saving Lives in Uganda!

"When I look back at these cases and countless others just like them, I can’t help but think back to the original question that kept me up at night. If I were to get sick anywhere in Uganda, I would want it to be in Nyakibale, and I would want the ECPs to care for me."

Hello friends and supporters,

We are now two months into 2016 and thought this would be a great time to provide an update on GECC's recent work in Uganda and to thank you for your continued support.

1. Junior ECP class at Nyakibale

The fifth class of ECP students at Nyakibale Hospital is progressing strongly. They have completed the first six months of their program. The four students are dedicated to learning and providing excellent patient care. We look forward to their continued engagement and growth.

2. New ECP Training Program at Masaka

The new GECC Emergency Medicine Training Program at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital has been building an atmosphere of success since it's inception in October of 2015. Six new ECP students have been studying a symptoms-based approach to patient care. Since this is a new site at a government hospital, the program has not come without its challenges. But, GECC staff on the ground is working diligently with the hospital administration to offer the best possible program for incoming students. We look forward to continued growth of this new program and are working towards recruiting a new, larger class of ECP students in August of 2016.

3. Emergency Medicine Residency Program in Uganda
GECC is supporting Mbarara University to development of the first Emergency Medicine Residency Program in Uganda. We were very proud to see an article about thius program appear in one of Uganda's largest national newspapers. Read it HERE!

4. Make Sure You Ask For an ECP - Don't miss the new blog post by GECC volunteer, Omeed Saghafi, MD, summing up his experiences working with the ECPs in Nyakibale.

5. Support GECC
I know you are receiving this because you are currently supporting GECC or have supported us in the past. I am sincerely grateful for your support. As GECC continues to grow the ECP program to multiple sites and branches out to support Emergency Care development across Uganda, our expenses also are increasing. I'd like to ask for your support once again as we work hard to build an accessible, equitable emergency care system in Uganda.
