Summary

The Covid 19 pandemic has put the safety of theatre staff at risk and caused essential operations to be cancelled. The Airseal System is essential in order for Surgeons to continue offering Keyhole surgery (laparoscopic and robotic) at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, Essex during the Covid19 pandemic and beyond. The Keyhole surgery programme at Broomfield Hospital is intended to be expanded and the number of Keyhole operations increased in the future.

Challenge

The operation involves surgeons having to inflate the abdomen of a patient with co2 gas in order to perform keyhole surgery. This gas is likely to carry the Covid19 virus when removed from the patient and is highly likely to infect the surgeons and operating theatre staff at the conclusion of the operation.

Solution

The Airseal System is designed to aspirate the gas without leaking in order to protect the surgeons and staff from getting infected. See attached link: The Airseal System will enable surgeons to be safer when carrying out their functions in the operating theatre by reducing the incidences of surgeons and theatre staff getting infected by gas being emitted from a patient that may carry the Covid19 virus.

Long-Term Impact

Surgeons are intending to carry out an increased number of Keyhole surgery operations. This piece of equipment will save lives not only in the current crisis, but in future operations. The System will optimise gas flow to provide a stable pneumoperitoneum (abnormal presence of air or other gases) in the abdominal cavity, constant smoke evacuation and valve free access. It also has the advantage that the camera used in Keyhole surgery does not get 'fogged up'.
