We rescue, shelter, care for and rehome hundreds of homeless cats and dogs in the Cayman Islands every year, who would otherwise suffer on the streets or be euthanised by the Cayman Islands government. We are the islands' only animal shelter and we also work closely with the community to reduce the overpopulation issues through spay/neuter clinics and educational outreach.
The Cayman Islands has a significant animal overpopulation problem. Irresponsible pet ownership and a reluctance to spay/neuter means that unwanted litters are dumped, many pets are neglected, ill-treated or abandoned, and some live in very poor conditions on the streets. The Humane Society operates the only animal shelter in the country, but the ever-increasing number of cats and dogs in our care and rising running costs mean that we cannot continue to care for all the animals who need us.
We provide life-saving shelter, care and veterinary treatment to the Cayman Islands' unwanted cat and dog population, and strive to find them loving forever homes, either in the Cayman Islands or overseas. Funding will allow us to provide veterinary care, spay/neuter surgeries, shelter, and rehoming to more animals, including by facilitating overseas adoptions. We will also be able to increase our community outreach initiatives through education and spay/neuter clinics to reduce overpopulation.
More funding will enable us to undertake increased community outreach, we will educate the public about responsible pet ownership, positive animal welfare, and the benefits of spay/neuter. Community veterinary clinics will enable us to spay/neuter more animals and to engage with the public. This will tackle the overpopulation problem in the Cayman Islands and thus alleviate overcrowding in the shelter, ensuring greatly improved welfare for the animals in our care and in the community.
