Following up on our last report about kids' actions while receiving the program, our ecobrick tournament was so succesfull we decided to make a second one. This time, the last group that won decided they would let another group earn the pizza. To our surprise, it wasn't even necessary! Another second grade group worked with determination, the teacher even expressed that they chose to use some of their recess to pick up trash from the school and then build their ecobricks. Their effort was such, that they involved their parents, their homes, and even their workplaces in the creation of ecobricks. They won the contest with an amazing amount of 54 ecobricks, the second place got 18 ecobricks, so you can imagine their endeavor. This event showed us how the program does have an effect on the school community and how some groups can be an example and a motivation to others.
Now, a Communitary Project from the University of Costa Rica will work with all the ecobricks we collected in the school to create a bench and some tree protectors so that kids see a resolution to their effort to clean the school. Also, it will allow them to observe the practical use of these bricks and therefore understand how we can transform trash into something useful and durable.
Kids are finishing up with the school year, and you know what that means: quizzes. Recently, one of the teachers of our second grade group, sent us a picture of an answer to a Social Studies exam. It stated: "Write down two characteristics of natural landscapes". The kid responded: " 1. We can find trees, rivers, and animals. 2. We find Mother Earth". This is a great indicator for our program, because it really shows the integration to their day to day thinking of what we discuss and experience with them.
Now that the year is ending, part of the products we have been working on, are the program and teacher guidelines for first and second grade of Yo Soy la Respuesta. This documents are going to enable us to escalate and replicate the program, but we still need to add third grade and for this...
We need your help!
In 2020, our program Yo Soy la Respuesta is aiming to finish the whole program guidelines for what in Costa Rica is called the First Cycle of Primary Education, which includes first, second and third grade. This year, with YOUR help we are being able to conclude our work with second grade. This includes the visits, the planning, the evaluation and the creation of these replicable documents that will be tested and validated by teachers this upcoming year. With this work, we will add third grade but we need your help to do this.
Please look forward to our end of the year campaign, where we will be looking for funds for our 2020 Yo Soy la Respuesta year, and remember, with your help you can impact the lives of kids and their families, that learn to be conscious by learning to love themselves and therefore learning to love our Mother Earth.
