A severe hunger crisis is devastating Uganda's Karamoja region after prolonged drought, widespread crop failure, and localized insecurity left thousands without food. Over 430,000 people face acute hunger, with dozens of starvation-related deaths already reported. Development Alert will provide emergency food supplies, nutrition support for children, and lifesaving assistance to the most vulnerable families while helping communities recover with resilience activities.
Karamoja is facing one of Uganda's worst hunger emergencies. Extended drought, failed harvests, livestock losses, and insecurity have left over 430,000 people without reliable food. Children, pregnant women, older people, and persons with disabilities face severe malnutrition and disease. Many families survive on one meal a day or less, while some communities report deaths linked to starvation.
Development Alert will distribute emergency food packages containing organic maize flour, beans, cooking oil, and salt to vulnerable households. We will also provide nutrition screening, community awareness, and referrals for severely malnourished children. Local volunteers will identify families most at risk, ensuring timely, transparent, and equitable delivery of lifesaving assistance.
Emergency food assistance will save lives, reduce malnutrition, and help 1000 families survive until the next harvest. Communities will regain strength to rebuild livelihoods while children remain healthier and better able to attend school. The project will also strengthen local emergency response systems, improving resilience against future droughts and food crises.
