Second Chance Thoroughbreds saves thoroughbred racehorses from going to auction. Once a racehorse enters into our program, we give them first lots of turn out to be able to be free and run around. After a vet evaluation, we restart the thoroughbreds under saddle and retrain them for a suitable and desirable skill, i.e., jumping, dressage, western pleasure, trail riding.
It would be nice to think that after a horse retires from racing that they will go to a life of ease on some ranch somewhere with rolling hills, grass, plenty of water, shade and warmth in the winter. Sadly that is not the fate of the majority of racehorses. After spending years in training and being pumped full of medicines and drugs to keep them going, within days of their last race you will find many of them at an auction house being sold as meat or as some byproduct.
We will be able to provide for 4 additional at risk thoroughbred horses including hay, grain, farrier and vet care. When properly rehabilitated, the horses will be trained in a suitable riding discipline and then be available for adoption.
The horses will be retrained for a suitable skill such as jumping, dressage, western pleasure, trail riding and once retrained, adopted into loving forever homes.
