Summary

No child should go hungry in America. Yet 1 in 5 children-nearly 13 million-face food insecurity. As school systems across the U.S., including districts like Prince William County Public Schools, face funding pressures, more families struggle to afford meals. Children are denied lunch, shamed, or go hungry. Help us erase school lunch debt for 2,000 students and restore dignity-one meal at a time.

Challenge

Childhood hunger is rising as families face higher food costs and reduced support. Across the U.S., school meal debt has reached billions, while local districts face funding gaps that strain student services. In some communities, tens of millions in school funding are at risk-placing more pressure on families already struggling. Hungry students are more likely to miss school, fall behind academically, and experience stigma when they cannot afford meals.

Solution

American Aid's Close the Lunch Gap Fund pays student meal debt directly to schools, ensuring children receive meals without shame or interruption. We work with school staff to identify families in need and connect them to support programs like SNAP and WIC. $25 provides a week of meals. $100 helps eliminate a child's debt. Your support fills critical gaps as school resources tighten and keeps children focused on learning-not hunger.

Long-Term Impact

When children have reliable access to food, they attend school more consistently, perform better, and build stronger futures. Families gain stability and avoid deeper financial hardship. As school systems face funding challenges, community support becomes essential. By addressing hunger today, we help children succeed academically and break the cycle of poverty-creating healthier, more resilient communities across the United States.
