In our secure urban lives of nuclear families with double incomes and upscale lifestyles, we rarely think of another likelihood - that of joint families, single meager income and hand-to-mouth existence all put together in a rural scenario.
Thirty five year old Shanthi tends to a family of 6. That may not seem very extraordinary until you learn that she is the second wife of Anbumani, a physically challenged, unemployed person. She raises 4 children- two her own and two of Anbumani’s first wife. She herself is illiterate and works at the loom, weaving her livelihood day after day. Her entire family lives off her meager income.
5 months ago, Shanthi attended a camp at Ponnammapettai, conducted by Sankara Eye Hospital, Coimbatore and was diagnosed with Cataract in the Right Eye. She was operated at the base hospital of Sankara at Coimbatore. She returned to her daily chores and all seemed to be going well until her other eye-Left eye also developed cataract. She quickly came to Sankara’s camp and her left eye was operated on 4th March 2013.
“When one finds it hard to find care and love amongst family and friends, Sankara has given me all that and much more, in fact a bright future for me and for my entire family”. Shanthi’s resilience is obvious to anyone who speaks to her. We at Sankara find yet another fulfilling reason to continue in our Mission for Vision.
